Fuel Filter Placement

Where is the proper placement on your fuel line for your fuel filter. Will it hurt performance if it is before the fuel pump.(between the tank and Pump)
I have a mechanical pump with the fuel filter before the pump. Will this cause any problems?

I run a mechanical pump also and have always ran 2 filters, one of those glass see thru filters within a foot or so from the fuel cell to keep an eye on the foam and another filter between the pump and the carb. Never had any trouble.
